Why is social media so important for businesses?

Social media started out as a way for friends to connect, It has now become one of the most powerful marketing tools of the 21st century.  With almost 60% of the global population engaging with some form of social media. Social media constitutes one of the most accessible forms of marketing outreach currently in existence.

Budget friendly social media

 ‘Traditional’ forms of marketing require a large budget. Getting started on social media can be a very budget friendly way of creating an online presence. Social media marketing can become expensive. Especially if you start hiring graphic designers and expert strategists, but the entry costs are very low, making it a viable option for SMEs. 

Build relationships through engagement

One of the many benefits of social media is that your customers can engage with you. It’s a perfect way of creating dialogue, enabling the receipt of feedback and the formation of a community.  Unlike creating a website and personalised forum, the platform and digital framework already exists, all that you need to do is create your account and publish meaningful content.

Learn from the competition

Social media also offers the perfect platform to learn from your competitors. Gauge what types of content and aesthetic get the best feedback, without having to produce them yourself!  You shouldn’t directly copy your competitors of course, you still want to develop a unique brand identity, but an appreciation of general market trends is always useful for developing that identity.

Create and share casual content on social media

Social media offers a wonderful opportunity to share content that other marketing platforms can’t quite facilitate. You can share the stories of customers, and other enjoyable anecdotes which wouldn’t quite merit buying newspaper space or designing a billboard. Through sharing and creating that kind of content, you can make your business feel more approachable and genuine, and create more opportunities for customers to engage with your brand.

Stay relevant

For better or worse, people spend a lot of time on social media. In terms of marketing opportunities, this means that a stable online presence will allow you to remain relevant, a constant presence in the lives of your followers.
This kind of online presence is in a way previously unheard of; never before have brands been afforded such an opportunity to integrate their presence with people’s daily lives, no matter where they are. 

This isn’t an opportunity which is handed to businesses on a platter; in order to keep followers and remain engaging, you can’t just post useless filler content; you need to post content which is aesthetically pleasing and provides value. This is easier said than done, but when it’s done well, it can be an effective way of remaining relevant in a constantly changing marketplace.

Social media strategy is complex, and as trends change at a rapid rate, it’s important to remain up to date. Don’t underestimate the amount of damage that can be done through appearing out of touch – social media isn’t a trivial form of marketing, if you’re unsure of what you’re doing, seek the advice of an expert.
